Where it came from
Released in 2004, Whenua was part of the Bionicle Toa Metru line, representing the Toa of Earth within the sprawling narrative of the Metru Nui era. The figure was designed to embody the grounded, hardworking nature of the Onu-Metru archives, utilizing the then-new Toa Metru build system which focused on increased articulation and a more streamlined, mechanical aesthetic compared to the preceding Toa Nuva models.
The character design featured a signature earth-toned color palette and a drill-based weapon set, reflecting the character's role as a subterranean protector. Upon release, the set was well-received by the Bionicle community for its poseability and the inclusion of a collectible Kanohi mask, which became a staple of the line's visual identity during this transitional period of the franchise's storytelling.
