Where it came from
Abstruse Appropriation is a piece from the Modern Horizons 3 Art Series, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. This subset of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion was designed to highlight the high-quality digital and traditional illustrations commissioned for the set, featuring oversized, borderless prints on premium cardstock that remove the traditional game frame to focus entirely on the artwork.
The original illustration for this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, known for his distinct, atmospheric style within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. In this piece, Kieryluk interprets the Eldrazi aesthetic—a hallmark of the set's Eldrazi Incursion theme—through a lens of cosmic distortion and consuming void. The art was well-received by fans of the game for its intricate rendering of surreal, tentacled anatomy, which successfully captures the unsettling, otherworldly nature of the Eldrazi entities.
