Provenance

Where it came from

Abu Ja'far was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the very first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, this set was inspired by the themes and folklore of the One Thousand and One Nights. The card was designed to reflect the Middle Eastern aesthetic of the expansion, functioning mechanically as a defensive creature that offered a restorative effect upon its demise.

The artwork for the card was created by Ken Meyer, Jr., one of the key illustrators who defined the early visual language of the game. Meyer utilized a distinct, painterly style that emphasized the fantasy-realist atmosphere prevalent in the set's early development. While the card is often remembered more for its niche utility than its competitive dominance, it remains a historical piece representing the foundational era of collectible card games.
