Where it came from
Abuelo's Awakening was released in late 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The card depicts a spectral, ancient spirit of the Ixalan plane, fitting into the set's broader narrative of subterranean exploration, Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics, and the cycle of life and death within the deep-earth cavern systems.
The card was illustrated by Livia Prima, who utilized a ethereal, glowing visual palette to emphasize the character's ghostly presence and connection to the spirit realm. Mechanically, the design focuses on the enchantment theme, allowing players to return permanents from the graveyard to the battlefield, a functional reflection of the 'awakening' process central to the card's thematic identity.
