Where it came from
Abundant Maw was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a high-cost creature that utilized the set's signature 'emerge' mechanic, allowing players to sacrifice a smaller creature to cast the Maw at a reduced cost. It represents the grotesque transformation of Innistrad’s fauna under the corrupting influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul.
The card was illustrated by artist Mathias Kollros, who was tasked with depicting the horrific, fleshy aesthetic consistent with the set's body-horror theme. The design emphasizes the Maw’s role as a drain-effect creature, intended for limited play environments where life gain and creature removal provide a necessary board presence. Upon its release, it was recognized as a functional, if niche, inclusion for midrange graveyard-focused strategies.
