Academy at Tolaria West

Academy at Tolaria West was released in 2009 as part of the initial Planechase expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a unique multiplayer variant where players travel between different locations, or 'planes', represented by oversized cards. Tolaria West is rooted in the rich lore of the Dominaria setting, specifically referencing the famed academy established by the archmage Urza to study time travel and artifice following the catastrophic events of the Phyrexian Invasion.

The card’s visual design was rendered by artist Svetlin Velinov, who utilized a moody, academic aesthetic to capture the isolation and intellectual weight of the academy. Within the context of the game, the card serves as a thematic anchor that provides mechanical advantages to players focusing on land-based strategies. It was well-received by the player base for its ability to shift the flow of a multiplayer game, effectively grounding the chaotic nature of the Planechase format in the established history of the game's most iconic school of magic.
