Where it came from
Academy Rector was originally printed as a rare card in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999, designed to reward players for sacrificing utility creatures to cheat powerful enchantments into play. This version, appearing in the 2000 World Championship Decks, was included in the deck piloted by Nicolai Herzog, who placed in the top tier of that year's world tournament. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as educational replicas, allowing players to experience the specific deck compositions used by professionals during high-level competitive play.
The art was illustrated by Pete Venters, who sought to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the Urza block’s magical academies. Because these World Championship versions feature a gold-bordered back and unique deck-specific card backs, they are not legal for sanctioned tournament play. However, they remain highly significant for collectors because they provide a preserved snapshot of the specific 'Rebel-Rector' strategies that dominated the competitive landscape at the turn of the millennium.
