Where it came from
Activated Sleeper was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, a collection designed to tie into the broader return-to-Dominaria narrative within Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a Phyrexian sleeper agent, reflecting the central conflict of the set where Phyrexian forces secretly infiltrated the plane's leadership and population. Mechanically, the card was built to interact with the graveyard, echoing the high-synergy design philosophy typically employed for Commander-focused sets to ensure utility in multiplayer formats.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a stark, visceral aesthetic to capture the horror of a Phyrexian transformation. The design intent was to visually convey the moment of 'activation,' where a seemingly mundane figure reveals their alien, metallic nature. Upon release, it was received as a versatile inclusion for black-aligned decks, particularly those focused on creature recursion, due to its flexible ability to mimic the traits of an opponent's fallen creatures.
