Where it came from
The Adanto Vanguard was introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ixalan. The set drew heavy inspiration from Mesoamerican mythology and the Age of Discovery, centering on the conflict between various factions, including the Legion of Dusk, a vampiric empire modeled after Spanish conquistadors. The card depicts a vanguard of this legion, emphasizing the faction's themes of rigid discipline and sacrifice in the pursuit of conquest.
The art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a stark, high-contrast style to reflect the militant nature of the character. The design focuses on the card's mechanical ability to survive damage at the cost of life, effectively capturing the 'pay-to-survive' flavor inherent to the Vampire faction in the game. Upon release, the card saw significant play in competitive formats for its efficiency as a resilient, low-cost threat.
