Adriana, Captain of the Guard

Adriana, Captain of the Guard was originally released in the 2016 Commander set, though it has seen subsequent reprints in products like Commander 2020. The card depicts a prominent leader from the plane of Fiora, a world defined by political intrigue and the volatile dynamics of the Conspiracy series. Its design emphasizes the 'meager' combat nature of multiplayer Commander games by rewarding players for attacking multiple opponents simultaneously through the monarch-adjacent mechanic of melee.

The art was rendered by illustrator Mathias Kollros, who sought to capture the stoic, authoritative presence of a military commander in the high-fantasy aesthetic signature to the Magic: The Gathering brand. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players seeking to build aggressive, board-centric Boros decks, as it provided a rare incentive to spread combat damage across the table rather than focusing entirely on a single target.
