Where it came from
Advanced Reconstruction was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. Designed to support the game's artifact-focused archetypes, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Lorehold College, which emphasizes the study of history and the excavation of ancient magical remnants. Its mechanics mirror the college's thematic focus on retrieving and repurposing items from the past.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the subject with a style consistent with the high-fantasy academic atmosphere of Strixhaven. By emphasizing the tactile process of magical research, the design aimed to ground the player in the scholarly environment of the set. Upon release, it was received as a functional utility tool for players utilizing graveyards and artifact synergy, fitting neatly into the broader Commander meta of the time.
