Where it came from
Aether Chaser was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the steampunk-inspired plane of Kaladesh, the card reflects the set's central conflict between the oppressive Consulate and the inventive rebels. It was designed to showcase the 'fabricate' mechanic, a thematic representation of the plane's unique energy-manipulation technology, which allows the player to choose between strengthening the creature or creating a resource-providing Servo token.
The card features artwork by Steve Argyle, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Argyle focused on capturing the agile, aerodynamic aesthetic of Kaladeshi technology, depicting the chaser mid-flight with a focus on motion and mechanical detail. Within the competitive environment of the time, the card was viewed primarily as a functional common, utilized in limited play formats to support aggressive strategies and provide utility through its token-generating capability.
