Where it came from
Aether Refinery was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 Commander set. This card is part of a specialized auxiliary product designed for the Commander format, which emphasizes multiplayer synergy and long-term resource management. The card reflects the set's broader thematic focus on retro-futuristic energy mechanics and the manipulation of energy counters, a recurring element in Magic: The Gathering's mechanical history.
The visual design features digital artwork that integrates the aesthetic of Aether-based technology, consistent with the high-fantasy industrial motifs found within the Modern Horizons 3 art direction. The card was crafted to serve as a utility piece, providing players with a repeatable method to generate and spend energy. It was received by the community as a targeted tool for artifact-centric and energy-themed decks, balancing complex resource interactions with the accessible, high-powered gameplay expected of contemporary Commander supplemental sets.
