Where it came from
Aether Storm was originally released in the Weatherlight expansion in 1997, later being reprinted as part of the Fifth Edition core set with the collector number 70. The card was designed during an era of Magic: The Gathering that prioritized complex, high-risk enchantments, reflecting the game's shift toward more volatile interaction between players' resource management and board states.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often leaned into the dark, atmospheric fantasy aesthetic prevalent in late 90s Wizards of the Coast products. The card was received by the player base as a niche tool for stasis-oriented strategies, functioning as a thematic piece that rewarded players for aggressively utilizing non-creature spells while simultaneously penalizing the casting of creatures.
