Where it came from
Aether Vial was first introduced in the 2004 set Darksteel as an uncommon artifact. Designed by Magic: The Gathering developers to facilitate creature-heavy strategies without requiring mana investment, the card quickly became a cornerstone of competitive play. It allows players to cheat creatures into play at instant speed, bypassing counterspells and providing significant tempo advantages in formats like Modern and Legacy.
The From the Vault: Relics printing released in 2010 was a special collector's set designed to showcase iconic artifacts throughout the game's history. This specific version features unique foil treatment and updated artwork by Kev Walker, who moved away from the original industrial aesthetic toward a more mystical, ethereal depiction of the vessel. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its aesthetic refresh and its continued necessity as a staple card in creature-based archetypes.
