What it does

Whenever this creature blocks a creature, you may return this creature to its owner's hand. If you do, you may put a creature card from your hand onto the battlefield blocking that creature.

Its fickle form holds hints of a thousand former identities.

Provenance

Where it came from

Aetherplasm was originally introduced in the Dissension expansion of 2006, set in the sprawling city-plane of Ravnica. It represents the color-shifted, ethereal nature of the blue-aligned Dimir guild, designed as a reactive defensive creature that could swap itself for a larger threat from its owner's hand when blocking. The card explores the theme of illusion and shifting state, capturing the manipulative essence of Ravnica's shadowy information brokers.

The version from Ravnica Remastered, released in 2024, features refreshed artwork by the artist Nottsuo. This set was designed to curate the most iconic and mechanically interesting cards from the three original Ravnica blocks into a cohesive draft experience. Nottsuo’s interpretation retains the spectral, fluid aesthetic of the creature while utilizing modern digital illustration techniques to provide a sharper, more vivid look compared to the original 2006 release.
