Provenance

Where it came from

Aethersnipe was originally introduced in the 2008 Shards of Alara set as a common creature representing the blue-aligned plane of Esper. The card is designed to showcase the mechanic of evoke, which allows a player to cast the creature for a reduced cost at the expense of it being sacrificed immediately, providing a versatile tool for board control and tempo manipulation.

The Ultimate Masters version, released in 2018, features updated artwork by the illustrator Svetlin Velinov. As a reprint set intended to provide a curated draft experience and high-value staples, the inclusion of Aethersnipe helped preserve the identity of the card while updating its visual presentation to align with modern aesthetic standards for Magic: The Gathering.
