Where it came from
Afflicted Deserter // Werewolf Ransacker was released in 2012 as part of the Dark Ascension expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to mechanically represent the double-faced transformation mechanic introduced in the Innistrad block, which allowed certain creatures to flip into more powerful forms based on the game state. It reflects the set's gothic horror theme, focusing on the plight of humanity besieged by werewolves and other supernatural threats in the world of Innistrad.
The artwork for this card was created by Volkan Baga, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of the Innistrad block. Baga’s design sought to capture the visceral shift from a weary, desperate soldier into a savage, transformed beast. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for limited play formats, noted for its ability to punish opponents who failed to play spells during their turns, thereby triggering the transform condition.
