Where it came from
Agate Instigator was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow Commander expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card is designed to fit the set's anthropomorphic woodland creature theme, specifically focusing on the lizard archetype, which utilizes a 'replicate' style mechanic to increase board presence and damage output. Its aesthetic draws on the whimsical, storybook-inspired art direction synonymous with the plane of Bloomburrow.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who captured the character's aggressive, volcanic nature to reflect its mechanical function of dealing damage to opponents whenever creatures enter the battlefield. It was released to provide Commander players with a thematic red creature that rewards a wide, aggressive strategy, and it was generally well-received by players for its efficiency within lizard-tribal decks.
