Where it came from
Agency Coroner was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Murders at Karlov Manor. The card was designed to fit the set's top-down noir-inspired mystery theme, where players assume the role of investigators navigating a crime-ridden cityscape. Mechanically, the card was intended to provide utility to black-aligned decks by facilitating graveyard interaction and card selection, reflecting the flavor of a forensic expert examining the remnants of a scene.
The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the grim, clinical atmosphere of the Ravnica Agency of Magicological Investigations. Staples employed a moody, low-key lighting scheme to emphasize the macabre nature of the coroner's task, aligning with the overall art direction of the set that sought to bridge high fantasy tropes with the aesthetic conventions of detective fiction. Upon release, the card was noted for its thematic cohesion and its functional role within the limited draft environment of the set.
