Provenance

Where it came from

Agrus Kos, Wojek Veteran was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the inaugural expansion for the Ravnica block in Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the titular character of the Ravnica novel series, a world-weary Boros Legion officer serving as a detective in a sprawling, guild-dominated metropolis. Mechanically, the card was created to reflect his status as a veteran commander, granting combat bonuses to other white and red creatures, which solidified his identity as a cornerstone of Boros-aligned deck archetypes during that era.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Greg Staples, who was tasked with capturing the gritty, noir-inspired aesthetic of the Ravnica setting. Staples leaned into a cinematic approach, depicting Kos with a stern, battle-worn expression that resonated with players who favored the set's aggressive, militaristic themes. The card remains a notable piece of Magic history for being one of the few instances where a primary character from the tie-in novels received a dedicated legendary creature card during the initial set release.
