Air Servant

Air Servant was featured as a core element of the Welcome Deck 2016, a collection designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as an entry point for new Magic: The Gathering players. These decks were distributed for free at game stores and events to introduce the fundamental mechanics of blue-aligned gameplay, emphasizing the color's thematic reliance on flying creatures and elemental manifestations. The card serves as a quintessential example of a 'vanilla' or simple creature, intended to teach players the basic interaction between mana cost, power, and toughness without the complexity of activated abilities.

The card features an illustration by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering universe known for his ethereal and atmospheric style. Hamm’s design for the Air Servant depicts a swirling, elemental construct composed of wind and cloud, capturing the kinetic energy associated with the elemental creature type. While the artwork received positive feedback for its fluid aesthetic, the card itself is primarily valued by the community for its instructional role, providing a stable, reliable flying threat that helps novices grasp the rhythm and balance of the game's combat phase.
