Where it came from
Ajani Steadfast was originally introduced in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering core set, designed as a planeswalker card that emphasizes team synergy and resilience. The Commander Masters version, featuring the collector number 813, serves as a reprint that integrates this character into the popular Commander format, maintaining the original mechanical identity that centers on bolstering loyalty and distributing +1/+1 counters to support a creature-heavy board state.
The character of Ajani Goldmane, a Leonin planeswalker, was illustrated by artist Chris Rahn for the original printing, with this specific Commander Masters variant showcasing the enduring legacy of the character's design. Rahn's depiction captures Ajani’s protective and steadfast nature, a visual aesthetic that has resonated with players since his introduction. Within the context of the Commander Masters set, the card was included to provide players with accessible versions of iconic planeswalkers, reflecting the game's ongoing commitment to supporting diverse play styles and long-term narrative arcs.
