Where it came from
Akim, the Soaring Wind was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, a collection specifically designed to expand the multiplayer Commander format for Magic: The Gathering. As a central legendary creature for the 'Arcane Maelstrom' preconstructed deck, Akim was conceptualized to provide a cohesive strategy centered around creating token creatures and utilizing combat mechanics. The design reflects a shift in Wizards of the Coast's approach to Commander-specific products, focusing on cards that provide both utility and thematic synergy for the Jeskai color identity.
The artwork was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and dynamic style to capture the essence of a wind-based spirit. Voss aimed to embody the concept of mobility and air manipulation, depicting Akim with sweeping, fluid lines that emphasize its ability to grant flying to tokens. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid centerpiece for 'go-wide' token strategies, earning recognition among players for its ability to capitalize on the board-state density frequently seen in multi-player matches.
