Akki Lavarunner // Tok-Tok, Volcano Born

Akki Lavarunner // Tok-Tok, Volcano Born was released in the 2004 Magic: The Gathering expansion Champions of Kamigawa. This set drew heavily from Japanese folklore and mythology, introducing players to the plane of Kamigawa. The card features a flip mechanic, a signature design element of the set where certain permanent cards could be rotated 180 degrees to transform into a more powerful version once specific conditions were met, reflecting the spiritual transformation central to the set's narrative.

The card was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who contributed to various Magic: The Gathering sets during the early 2000s. In designing this card, the visual narrative captures the transition of an Akki—a goblinoid creature native to the mountains of Kamigawa—as it channels volcanic energy to ascend into the entity Tok-Tok. The design was received as a functional, flavor-focused example of the set’s transformation mechanic, illustrating the balance between the mortal and spirit realms that defined the Kamigawa block.
