Akoum Refuge

Akoum Refuge was originally introduced in the Zendikar expansion in 2009, designed as part of a cycle of lands intended to reflect the dangerous, treasure-filled landscape of the plane. The card provides both mana and life gain, mechanics that emphasize the theme of finding shelter in a volatile environment. It was later reprinted in the Commander 2013 product, a boxed set that expanded the popularity of the Commander format by providing preconstructed decks with unique cards.

The artwork for this particular printing was created by artist Florian de Gesincourt, who depicted the refuge with a sense of scale meant to evoke the jagged, mountainous geography of the Akoum region. As a common land, it was designed primarily to serve as a utility piece in draft environments and budget-friendly constructed decks. The card is noted for its aesthetic consistency with the broader Zendikar visual identity, which favored sweeping vistas and rugged, adventurous settings.
