Alaborn Zealot

Alaborn Zealot was released in 1998 as part of the Portal Second Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast as an entry-level product, intended to simplify the game's mechanics for newer players by removing complex timing rules and instant-speed interactions. The card features a classic fantasy aesthetic typical of the late 1990s, focusing on straightforward creature combat to emphasize the set's pedagogical goal of teaching fundamental card advantage and board presence.

The card was illustrated by Heather Hudson, a prolific artist in the early Magic: The Gathering era known for her soft, painterly style. Hudson’s depiction of the Zealot reflects the high-fantasy tone established for the Alaborn faction—a group portrayed as noble, disciplined warriors. While the card is mechanically simple and was not designed for competitive formats like tournament play, it is remembered by collectors as a distinct representative of the Portal era's attempt to bridge the gap between casual play and the deeper complexities of the core game.
