Provenance

Where it came from

The Albino Troll was originally featured in the 1999 expansion set Urza's Destiny. As a creature card, it was designed with a unique drawback-based mechanic, requiring players to pay a green mana cost each upkeep to keep the troll on the battlefield. This design reflected the aggressive, mana-intensive themes common in the Urza block, emphasizing a powerful body balanced by a constant resource tax.

The version from the 2002 Friday Night Magic series was issued as a promotional foil card, released to local game stores to reward players for participation in weekly tournaments. Paolo Parente, a prolific illustrator for the game during that era, provided the artwork. Parente’s style, often noted for its gritty texture and anatomical focus, gave the troll a rugged, swamp-dwelling aesthetic that aligned with the card's nature-aligned, yet volatile, gameplay role.
