Where it came from
Alchemist's Retrieval was originally released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. This card exemplifies the set's gothic horror aesthetic, which focused on a high-society vampire wedding and the desperate alchemy practiced by human survivors in the shadow of eternal night. The artwork depicts a frantic researcher pulling artifacts from the churning waters, capturing the frantic energy of the set's blue-aligned spellcraft.
The version found in 'The List' is a special inclusion designed by Wizards of the Coast to curate reprints from throughout the game's long history into modern booster packs. By placing this card into The List, the designers maintained thematic consistency with the Crimson Vow environment while offering players access to utility spells that facilitate graveyard recursion and board state manipulation. It remains a functional piece of modern card design, prized by players for its versatile ability to return nonland permanents to a hand.
