Where it came from
Alena, Kessig Trapper was released in the 2020 set Commander Legends, a draftable expansion specifically designed for the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card features Alena, a character from the plane of Innistrad, who is portrayed as a professional monster hunter alongside her partner, Halana. The inclusion of these characters in the set was intended to expand the lore of Innistrad and provide players with specialized synergy pieces for red-aligned decks, particularly those focusing on mana generation.
The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and character-focused style. Briclot designed Alena to reflect the rugged, utilitarian aesthetic of the Kessig province, emphasizing her role as a survivalist. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility in ramp-heavy strategies, securing a permanent place in decks that utilize mana-dump mechanics or require repeatable mana acceleration.
