Where it came from
Allure of the Unknown was released in 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death promotional set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was specifically distributed as a Buy-a-Box promotion, designed to encourage players to purchase full booster boxes of the expansion through local game stores. The card features art by Titus Lunter, who captured the set's Greek mythology-inspired aesthetic by depicting the ominous, high-stakes trade inherent in the game's black-red color identity.
The design of the card focuses on the flavor of temptation and chaos, reflecting the underworld themes of Theros. As a promo, this card features unique 'prerelease' or 'extended art' framing that distinguishes it from the version found in standard booster packs. It was received by the player community as a high-variance, flavorful addition to Commander and casual play, praised for its evocative artwork that fits seamlessly into the dramatic visual narrative of the Theros plane.
