Where it came from
The Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad card, numbered 45, originates from the promotional and tie-in merchandise ecosystem surrounding the launch of the original Assassin's Creed video game. Released by Ubisoft in 2007, the item served as a foundational piece of character art for the franchise, designed to establish the visual identity of the protagonist as a mysterious, hooded figure set against the backdrop of the Third Crusade. The design draws heavily on the concept art developed by the Ubisoft Montreal art team, led by Khai Nguyen, who sought to blend historical realism with the stylized, high-contrast aesthetic typical of early modern action-adventure titles.
Upon its introduction, this imagery became synonymous with the Assassin's Creed brand, marking the transition of Altaïr from a narrative character into a pop culture icon. The card was produced during a period when game developers relied heavily on physical collectibles and trading card sets to build pre-release hype among gaming enthusiasts. It was received as a definitive reference point for the game’s lore, praised by the community for its intricate detail and the way it encapsulated the series' core themes of anonymity and precision, effectively cementing Altaïr's status as the quintessential representative of the Assassin Brotherhood.
