Provenance

Where it came from

Originally appearing in the 2000 set Tempest, Altar of Dementia was reprinted as part of the Conspiracy expansion in 2014. This set was designed specifically for draft-based multiplayer gameplay, prioritizing cards that created social tension and interactive board states. The reprint served to provide players with a powerful utility engine that forces opponents to mill cards, a classic strategy in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem that disrupts traditional resource management.

The illustration for the Conspiracy version was handled by artist Mark Tedin, who has contributed to the game since its earliest days. Tedin’s visual approach often leans into the eerie and surreal, and for this piece, he aimed to depict the visceral nature of the card’s effect. The design focuses on the darker, gothic aesthetic prevalent in early Magic lore, creating a sense of dread that aligns with the card’s function of consuming a player’s library to fuel a strategic sacrifice.
