Where it came from
Altar of the Brood was originally released in the 2014 Khans of Tarkir expansion as a rare artifact designed to facilitate mill-based strategies in Magic: The Gathering. Its mechanical identity centers on forcing opponents to discard cards from their libraries whenever a permanent enters the battlefield under the player's control, making it a staple for combo-oriented deck builders. The card represents the lore of Tarkir, specifically the veneration of the dragon spirits that loom over the plane's history.
This specific iteration hails from the 2023 Secret Lair Countdown Kit, a limited-edition advent calendar-style product released by Wizards of the Coast. The art for this version was commissioned to fit the unique, high-contrast aesthetic synonymous with the Secret Lair series, which often reimagines classic cards through modern, experimental, or stylized illustration techniques. It is highly sought after by collectors for its distinct visual departure from the original Khans of Tarkir printing.
