Provenance

Where it came from

An-Zerrin Ruins was released in 1995 as part of the Homelands expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed by the Wizards of the Coast team to explore the lore of the plane of Ulgrotha, a gothic-inspired world characterized by dark, isolated narratives. The card itself represents a specific location within this setting, intended to reflect the lore of a ruined city once held by the followers of the planeswalker Ravi.

The card illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a prominent figure in the early years of the game. His aesthetic for this piece utilized a somber, muted color palette and stark linework to convey the desolation of the ruins. Upon its release, the card received a mixed reception from players, as the mechanics were viewed as highly situational and restrictive compared to other cards of the era, leading it to become a deep-cut piece of early Magic history.
