Provenance

Where it came from

The Angel card from the Marvel: Darkhold Destiny Tokens set was released during the mid-1990s, a period when Marvel Comics heavily leaned into occult and supernatural themes. The collection served as a companion to the Darkhold crossover event, which centered on the legendary tome of dark magic within the Marvel Universe. These tokens were designed to reflect the somber, mystical aesthetic associated with the Darkhold's influence on various heroes, positioning them as collectibles that bridged the gap between traditional trading cards and game-based tokens.

The design of the card emphasizes the somber transformation of Warren Worthington III as he is touched by the corruptive forces of the Darkhold. Illustrations for the set were curated to maintain a consistent, moody artistic direction that deviated from the bright, primary-colored palettes typical of standard superhero comics at the time. Upon release, the set was received as a niche expansion for collectors focused on the darker narrative corners of the Marvel imprint, valued more for its thematic cohesion than for gameplay utility.
