Where it came from
The Angel of Despair promo card was released as a prize for Store Championship events in the Magic: The Gathering organized play circuit. Originally appearing in the Guildpact set as a powerful rare creature representing the Orzhov Syndicate, this specific promotional version was issued to reward top-performing players at local game store tournaments, reflecting the game's tradition of offering unique, often foil-treated, versions of competitive staples to incentivize community participation.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Greg Staples, who rendered the Angel of Despair with the dark, ethereal, and gothic aesthetic synonymous with the Orzhov guild. Staples utilized a muted, ghostly color palette and dramatic lighting to evoke the character's role as a harbinger of ruin. The design was well-received by players for its balance of aggressive power and thematic cohesion, solidifying the card as a sought-after aesthetic upgrade within the game's secondary market.
