Angry Mob

Angry Mob was originally released in the 1994 expansion set The Dark before being reprinted in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. The card was designed during an era when Magic: The Gathering developers frequently utilized top-down design to translate common fantasy tropes—such as the classic pitchfork-wielding townspeople—into functional game mechanics. Its ability, which scales in power based on the number of Swamps the opponent controls, reflects the thematic narrative of villagers reacting to dark magic or necromancy.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Drew Tucker, whose distinctive, painterly, and often abstract style helped define the aesthetic identity of early Magic cards. Tucker employed a moody, muted color palette that emphasized the grim and chaotic nature of a riotous group.
