Where it came from
Ao, the Dawn Sky was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering product line Secrets of Strixhaven Commander, which introduced special alternate-frame cards featuring distinct artistic styles. This card represents a Kami from the Kamigawa plane, specifically reimagined within the aesthetic framework of the Strixhaven set. The design process focused on translating the draconic, celestial nature of the character into a visual language that fits the scholarly and mystical themes of Strixhaven University.
The artwork for this particular iteration of Ao was crafted to emphasize the creature's status as a powerful deity of the dawn, utilizing bold lines and a palette intended to evoke sunrise. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for both its tactical utility in Commander format games and its stylistic departure from traditional Magic: The Gathering card art, marking a period where Wizards of the Coast leaned heavily into diverse artistic collaborations.
