Where it came from
Apex Altisaur was released as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set in late 2023. This card serves as a thematic cornerstone for the set, leaning into the prehistoric, dinosaur-heavy aesthetic of the Ixalan plane. It was designed to function as a powerful, high-impact creature that encourages players to interact with the board through its unique 'Enrage' and 'Fight' mechanics, effectively acting as both a board presence and a removal tool for opposing threats.
The artwork, illustrated by Games Workshop veteran and fantasy artist Greg Staples, captures the imposing scale and ferocity of the creature. Staples employed a textured, painterly style that emphasizes the Altisaur's reptilian hide and the lush, dangerous environment of the subterranean caverns. Upon release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to clear complex board states, solidifying its place as a staple in dinosaur-themed tribal decks.
