Where it came from
Arcane Bombardment was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Streets of New Capenna. Designed as a rare enchantment, it embodies the chaotic, explosive aesthetic of the set's Izzet-aligned spellcasting theme, where players are rewarded for casting multiple instant and sorcery spells in a single turn. The card was intended to provide a high-variance, powerful top-end effect for Commander and Constructed formats, leaning into the set’s focus on mob-inspired art deco indulgence and magical excess.
The illustration for the standard version was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who sought to capture the visceral, overwhelming nature of a magical barrage. The 101s promo version specifically reflects the set's distinctive border treatments, which were developed to highlight the interconnected, ornate architectural themes of New Capenna. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a definitive 'build-around' enchantment, celebrated for its ability to drastically swing the state of a game through the recursive casting of previously played spells.
