Arcane Teachings

Arcane Teachings originally debuted in the Judgment expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2002. Designed to capture the theme of a magical mentor imparting knowledge to a student, the card allows a creature to tap for mana while granting it an ability that scales with the controller's hand size. Its inclusion in 'The List' is part of a recurring initiative by Wizards of the Coast to reprint legacy cards in modern booster packs, ensuring that older, mechanically distinct designs remain accessible to current players.

The original illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work defined much of the early 2000s aesthetic for the game. Her design focused on the interplay between the ethereal energy of the enchantment and the grounding presence of the creature receiving the lesson. While the card is generally considered a niche utility piece in casual formats, it remains a beloved example of the enchantment-based mana acceleration that characterized the design philosophy of the Odyssey block.
