Where it came from
Archfiend of Despair was released in the 2018 set Battlebond, a product specifically designed for the Two-Headed Giant variant of Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Battlebond was conceived to emphasize cooperative gameplay, blending new card designs with reprints that catered to multiplayer dynamics. This particular demon card was crafted to be a high-impact threat that amplifies damage and prevents life gain, directly addressing the longer, more board-focused nature of team-based games.
The creature features artwork by Daarken, a long-time illustrator for Wizards of the Coast. The visual design focuses on a monolithic, imposing demonic figure, utilizing deep shadows and a muted palette to evoke a sense of inevitability and existential dread. Upon release, the card was received positively by the Commander and casual multiplayer communities, who valued its ability to act as a definitive finisher in formats where life totals are frequently inflated.
