Provenance

Where it came from

The Archfiend of Ifnir was introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Amonkhet, a block themed heavily around Ancient Egyptian aesthetics and a brutal, cycle-based society. As a rare black creature, the card was designed to synergize with the set's cycle mechanic, punishing opponents by placing -1/-1 counters on their creatures whenever its controller discarded a card. This mechanic mirrored the set's internal narrative of decay and the relentless burden placed upon the citizens of the city of Naktamun.

The art was illustrated by Clint Cearley, who depicted the demon as a towering, skeletal figure reflecting the harsh, sun-bleached atmosphere of the Amonkhet plane. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the Magic community as a potent limited-play powerhouse and a staple in graveyard-focused Commander decks, praised for its ability to clear the battlefield while maintaining pressure on the opponent.
