Provenance

Where it came from

Archipelagore was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed around the theme of giant monsters and featured a specialized keyword mechanic called mutate, which allowed players to stack creatures to evolve their abilities. Archipelagore was created to embody the set's focus on massive sea-dwelling behemoths that could dominate the board state through its unique ability to tap down opposing creatures upon mutation.

The card was illustrated by long-time Magic artist Kev Walker, who has been contributing to the game since the mid-1990s. Walker is known for his gritty, detailed style, and for this piece, he aimed to visualize a colossal serpent emerging from the ocean with an island-like shell on its back. The card was well-received by limited-format players for its utility in controlling the tempo of a game, solidifying its place as a staple uncommon of the Ikoria release.
