Provenance

Where it came from

Army Ants was released in the Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering in early 1997. This set was unique for the time as it was the first expansion to be composed almost entirely of cards designed by players who had won tournaments, aimed at creating more balanced and competitive gameplay. The card itself, a black creature, reflects the game's shift toward more aggressive, resource-destroying mechanics that characterized the mid-nineties meta.

The art was a collaboration between the renowned comic book artist Geofrey Darrow and I. Rabarot. Darrow, known for his incredibly dense, hyper-detailed linework and frenetic compositions, brought a distinct aesthetic to the creature that departed from the more traditional fantasy tropes of the era. The illustration was received as a stylistic standout, capturing a gritty, industrial sense of insectoid warfare that remains highly recognizable among long-time collectors of the game's early sets.
