Where it came from
Arni Slays the Troll was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaldheim. The card depicts a moment from the Norse-inspired plane of Kaldheim, centering on the legendary warrior Arni Brokenbrow. It was designed as a red-colored 'saga' enchantment, a card type that narrates the myths and folklore of the world through a multi-turn sequence of effects.
The artwork was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a bold, kinetic style to capture the chaotic energy of the encounter between the boastful Arni and his hulking troll opponent. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to the set, praised by players for how its mechanics successfully mirrored the over-the-top, legendary storytelling style typical of the Kaldheim setting.
