Artillery Blast

Artillery Blast was released in September 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria United. The card was designed to function as a common-rarity removal spell within the set's limited environment, reflecting the high-stakes military conflict between the forces of Dominaria and the invading Phyrexians. Its mechanics were balanced to provide white-aligned decks with a reliable, albeit costly, way to handle large threats on the battlefield during a period when the game's narrative focused heavily on a desperate, plane-wide defensive war.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Livia Prima, who rendered the kinetic energy of a Coalition cannon strike. Her design goal was to emphasize the tactile and destructive nature of the weapon, utilizing a dramatic perspective that highlights the flash of the blast against the backdrop of an embattled cityscape. The artwork was well-received by players for its ability to visually communicate the card’s mechanical role as a powerful, singular decisive strike.
