Provenance

Where it came from

Ascendant Evincar was originally released in the 1998 Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Mark Tedin. The card represents Crovax, a central character in the Weatherlight Saga, capturing his transformation into a powerful, oppressive vampire lord. The design intent was to reflect his dominance over the battlefield by providing a global power-boosting effect for black creatures while simultaneously weakening opposing forces.

The version from the Duels of the Planeswalkers promotional set serves as a later reprint of this classic card. While the core game mechanics remained consistent with Tedin's original vision, the release was part of a larger initiative to introduce iconic creatures to a new generation of players through video game-linked promotions. It is regarded by collectors as a quintessential example of black-aligned aggressive utility in the late 1990s era of the game.
