Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card from the Duels of the Planeswalkers set was released in 2009 as part of a promotional tie-in for the video game of the same name. This set introduced many players to the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering through a digital interface, serving as a gateway for a new generation of enthusiasts. The art for this particular card was designed to mirror the clean, accessible aesthetic of the early digital iterations of the game.

The illustration depicts a classic, tranquil landscape consistent with the blue mana identity within the Magic multiverse. By utilizing a simplified visual language, the designers aimed to provide clarity for new players navigating the game's complexities. The set was generally well-received for its role in expanding the reach of the physical card game, and this base land remains a functional piece of the game's history during its transition into the digital age.
